Francesca Zappa’s Made You Up (2017 Reading Book #109)

This book is pretty much a case study on why authors need to do their research and have sensitivity readers look at their work. So much of this novel is completely unrealistic portrayal of schizophrenia that it doing more harm than good as far as raising awareness for mental illness awareness.

It even dipped into the love conquers all trope where a romantic partner can help in solving problems that really can only be assisted with by a mental health professional. The romance in this novel was especially gag-worthy. I wouldn’t find it charming or especially healthy if the schizophrenia detail was removed.

I wasn’t really sure what Alex’s goals were in the novel and the plot felt a little scattered at times. I wish there had been a clearer goal and more moving the plot along. The plot twist toward the end was especially horrendous and unrealistic and felt like a common plot twist in stories about characters with mental health issues.

I didn’t find much to love or even like in this book as it was so extremely problematic.
